Garang John sworn in as Jonglei Revenue Authority chairperson pledges economic reforms

The swearing-in ceremony, held in Bor, was presided over by the Governor of Jonglei State, Dr Riek Gai Kok, who tasked the newly appointed revenue chief with improving domestic revenue generation and enhancing institutional efficiency.
Speaking shortly after taking the oath of office, Garang pledged to work closely with the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Investment and other government institutions to modernise revenue collection mechanisms and strengthen accountability within the state’s financial system.
“I understand the need for change, and I am here to ensure progress is achieved. I will work closely with relevant institutions to improve systems and ensure effective revenue collection throughout Jonglei State,” Garang stated.
He said his leadership would focus on improving coordination among revenue institutions, strengthening tax administration, and promoting transparency in the collection and management of public funds.
Garang’s appointment comes at a time when the Jonglei State government is intensifying efforts to improve local revenue generation and reduce reliance on external support for government operations and development projects.
During the ceremony, Governor Riek Gai congratulated Garang on his appointment and described the position as a major responsibility that requires commitment, resilience, and determination.
“Today you have been entrusted with a major responsibility. You are not the first person to hold such a position, and challenges will come, but you will overcome them,” the governor said.
The governor emphasised that effective revenue collection remains critical for the development and economic stability of Jonglei State, adding that the government would support the commission in carrying out its mandate.
“In every situation, success depends on determination and commitment toward boosting the economy of Jonglei State. Revenue collection remains a vital agency for government development,” he added.
Also speaking during the event, the Deputy Governor of Jonglei State, Wilson Awuol Gatjang, urged Garang to work collaboratively with colleagues and relevant institutions to strengthen the state’s economic performance.
“Commit yourself fully and work closely with your colleagues in Jonglei State to improve economic performance and strengthen the revenue system,” Wilson said.
The Independent State Revenue Authority Commission is responsible for mobilising local revenues that support public services and government programs across Jonglei State. Observers say the appointment of new leadership signals renewed efforts by the state government to improve economic management and strengthen public financial systems.
