BOR – A plane crash-landed on Tuesday afternoon while attempting to land in Paguir payam of Fangak County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, a local official said.

Biel Buturuth Biel, commissioner for Fangak County, told in an interview that the aircraft was chartered to deliver oral cholera vaccines from Juba. He said the crew members and the one passenger on board were safe.

“The plane was coming from Juba bringing oral cholera vaccines to Fangak County and it landed in New Fangak safely. After landing at New Fangak, it took off going to Paguir, the center of the county, where it crossed a local dyke while landing,” Biel said.

He added that there was not much damage to the aircraft and that only some of the vaccines were damaged but had been collected by the World Health Organization.

The crew members would be taken back to Juba on Wednesday, he said.

Nyamar Lony Thichot, Jonglei state minister for information, confirmed the incident occurred at an airstrip in Fangak County and said more details were being gathered.

The type of aircraft and the exact number of people on board were not immediately known.

The incident follows a history of aviation accidents in South Sudan, including a crash in January 2025 that killed 19 people.

Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the latest crash-landing.
